A common philosophy of mermaid society could be summarized thus: "Life's too short.  Might as well enjoy it."  Mermaids have the shortest lifespan of any of the sentient species -- only forty years, as opposed to seventy for humans and werewolves, seventy-five for Gorgons, fifty for fairies, and close to a thousand for dragons.  This is partly because they age fast, but it's also partly because they live in the ocean, surrounded by predators all the time, and they are not at the top of the food chain.
