So all mermaid music is not ugly-sounding, or even meant to be.  Most musicians who sing or play for other mermaids perform gorgeous music that only mermaid hearing could properly appreciate.  However, this is something that musicians don't tend to mention to non-mermaids, especially since the music they perform for other species is always meant to annoy.  Besides, they enjoy playing hideous songs for each other, too, which is why some are written to sound ugly, no matter what!
