Checkers just seemed like the right game for Linnea to be playing.  It definitely wouldn't be chess -- smart as Linnea is, she's not a "cliche nerd," or even really a strategic thinker that sort of way.  The game of checkers also seems much more prone to being a friendly, "older and younger siblings playing together" sort of game.  Anyway, I like how sensible Linnea is, and how ridiculous she finds Loretta's request.  She is not moved by irrational begging or hysteria!
