Loretta doesn't know much about magic yet -- she has been studying it a little bit, but she's not Linnea; she's much more likely to polish pretty swords for hours than struggle through a difficult book about basic spellcasting.  While she probably can do a little bit at this point, she obviously needs something really flashy to impress her parents, and that's not a beginner sort of thing.  Happily, she knows how to use that crystal ball Aylia left her, so she can call a friend to help her!
