Though class-lengths in the knight school may be similar to ones we'd see in many colleges in our world, their grading system is not.  They do not grade people according to effort put in: all classes are pass-or-fail, period.  Because of this, passing gets increasingly harder as classes get more difficult, and many students either drop out or get kicked out before the end.  So advanced classes, like Lanon mentions, are the bane of many students' existences; they make it impossible to take terms off to relax.
