There's an interesting detail -- Alassa's the only human in the wizarding school to have two non-human roommates, or at least one of very few (it's likely there are a few others that this boy doesn't know about).  Most people are that school really are human -- I'm pretty sure Alassa got put in a building that mostly has non-humans, probably because no other humans could stand to be around her, and it's hard to bother a pink fairy -- and the Gorgon got unlucky.
