Edwardine feels threatened to see other people having fun around her.  She particularly hates grown-ups who don't mind chucking dignity to goof off and enjoy life like kids.  And the way she treats her husband every day is . . . extremely controlling.  Basically, she wants everybody around her to take life deadly seriously, and to do whatever she says in grim, strict obedience -- and her husband more than anybody.  Is it any wonder the woman is never happy?  She won't let anyone be!
