Remember: Elan's not a student at the wizarding school.  She is a student at the knight school, where her father teaches.  She's never met Stefanee before, and she's certainly never heard music from Carolynn.  As far as she can tell, some ocean clan Gorgon (that's what Stefanee looks like currently) is directly responsible for bringing that mermaid in, for no reason she can determine.  And while Elan doesn't despise ocean clan (unlike mountain clan), she considers them dim-witted savages.
