Aylia really ought to have considered the obvious flaw in her reasoning, but she actually never thought to find out which clan Elan was from.  Also, while she isn't actively species-ist, sometimes she thinks dumb things without realizing she's doing it (like assuming that all black fairies know each other, which is quite ludicrous).  When Stefanee's in Gorgon form, she looks like she's ocean clan; most Gorgons' clans are obvious at a glance by the species of their snakes.
