As Linnea's mother mentions in this strip, she's a linguistics professor.  Is it any wonder she'd adore learning translation magic?  She's crazy about puns and weird little details, and is just the sort of person who would geek out over the realization that "very" can be used as an adjective, not just an adverb.  (What?  It's fun to geek out over linguistic things!  Language is fun!)  Linnea's father is a high school math teacher, and he likes to geek out over funny mathematical things.
