My high school was seriously awesome in that every student was required to play an instrument -- and to sing.  The "popular kids" were often first chair in their sections, actually!  (Laugh.)  I played trombone in both the Wind Ensemble (the higher concert band) and the Jazz Band, and loved it.  In junior high school, I played in the Orchestra and Jazz Band.  I was pretty awful until I got the fantastic band teacher in high school, however, so I credit most of my musical knowledge and appreciation to him.
