By the way, as a point of interest, I suspect the original species that all the "humanoid" species diverged from was not human, but mermish.  This would especially make sense when you consider that, of all the sentient species, mermaids and fairies are the ones who find shapeshifting magic easiest.  It's just too bad that's a detail nobody in Aylia's world could reasonably know!  Even dragons, who live longest of all the sentient species, can only remember that far back through dim legends.
