As you may recall, people can't use magic while transformed, either by their own magic (shapeshifting), or by someone else's.  There is one exception to this: a person can use shapeshifting magic while shapeshifted, though they can't while transformed by someone else.  So Aylia's trying to trick Stefanee here into revealing her real shape by shapeshifting into it to cast magic -- and failing.  Stefanee's fairly wily, so she catches onto things fast, especially trap-like things.
