Alassa may be an idiot most of the time, but she's stupid by choice, not by nature.  When she puts her mind to doing something, she can be quite competent, especially if she's decided it's something she wants to put a lot of effort into.  Back in Strip #824, Alassa declared that she had decided to make her focus in school animal transformations.  And so, months later, she's learned enough about the magic to be able to put some of it into practice -- to Bobby's cost.
