The second panel introduces an important detail I realized I hadn't introduced yet.  There are plenty of corrupt royal families in Aylia's world, but hers is fortunately not one of them.  In a corrupt royal family, current kings and queens tend to refuse to lay down their power, so assassinations are the most common way for power to exchange hands.  In a reasonable royal family, however, the power would exchange hands as soon as the current rulers decide their children are old enough to handle it wisely.
