Would you believe I had George planned out before I knew about Kuralla?  I've known George would show up in the story since around Strip #50, even though he plays very little part in the story.  He first showed up in an extra I drew in my little sketchbook (one I will never post online, because while it seemed funny at the time, it just seems stupid to me now), way back around that time.  Kuralla I didn't even know existed until around Strip #400!
